2024 was a promising start, but Jeff Hafley needs some upgrades to take a step forward.
The Packers’ defense was better in 2024. That much seems obvious.
But it seems just as obvious that they’re still going to need some help heading into the 2025 season. It won’t be anything as drastic as the complete overhaul Brian Gutekunst did on the safety position last offseason, but there are several areas of the defense that might need a minor to moderate remodel.
The cornerback room is a good place to start. To say things concerning Jaire Alexander’s situation are uncertain is drastically understating it. It’s a fair bet that he won’t be with the Packers next year, and even if he is, I don’t think anybody’s counting on him to play a full season or even most of one.
Then there’s Keisean Nixon, a bit of a wildcard in the best of circumstances. Do you really want to go a whole season with him as your top corner? Probably not, which means the Packers probably need to invest at the position in a significant way if they want to avoid Nixon as their top corner, assuming they’re also not counting on Alexander.
And even beyond Alexander and Nixon, the cupboard is pretty bare. Eric Stokes and Corey Ballentine are both free agents, and Carrington Valentine is a fine enough supporting piece but doesn’t give you much beyond that.
The Packers need help at pretty much every level of their cornerback depth chart. Can they get it?
