The 2022 first-round pick took big strides in 2024.
The Packers had plenty of issues up front on defense in 2024, but third-year defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt wasn’t one of them.
Though he missed several games due to injury, Wyatt flourished in Jeff Hafley’s new scheme, just as expected. In fact, he’s one of the only players that seems to have taken to it right away, hitting the ground running with three sacks and six tackles for loss in the Packers’ first four games last season.
Now, one player does not a defense make, but it’s at least a solid building block for a unit that’s still going to need an injection of talent this offseason. If the Packers can put another solid interior piece next to Wyatt and add some juice to their edge rusher rotation, they’ll be well on their way to a much stronger front for 2025.
It’s funny, though. When he was drafted, the question about Wyatt was whether or not he could be a strong complement next to Kenny Clark. But now that Clark appears to be at least somewhat on the wane, those roles have been reversed. Now we’re wondering if someone can complement Wyatt — whether that’s Clark or someone else.
And it’s not impossible that Clark reverses course, either. He’s made the Pro Bowl in every odd-numbered season dating back to 2019, so maybe 2025 turns out to be a fantastic last hurrah for the former first-round pick.
