The Packers biggest positions of need still need addressing.
The Packers entered free agency needing help at edge rusher, on the defensive line, and at wide receiver.
The Packers exited free agency needing help at edge rusher, on the defensive line, and at wide receiver, depending on how much help you think Mecole Hardman will bring to the wide receiver room.
Even if you’re a fan of the Aaron Banks and Nate Hobbs signings, it’s hard to argue the Packers are stronger at their positions of need than they were a month ago. This puts them in the unenviable position of having to hit at a couple of positions in this year’s draft lest they head into next season facing mostly the same problems with which they ended the last one.
It’s not impossible to do that, you just need to hit your picks and get some help — stacking your draft board the right way doesn’t matter much if all the good players are gone by the time you get your turn.
Still, it seems Brian Gutekunst has the right mindset. Even if the Packers need defensive line help, he’s vowing not to chase that position. Reaching for a pick just because you need a certain position is a quick way to waste a selection, which is obviously just as bad as not picking or signing someone at all.
The overall point, though, is obvious: as always, the Packers still have work to do.
