With stars reportedly available, will the Packers make a move?
It’s February, and if your team isn’t in the Super Bowl, your football media diet is going to consist of pretty much the same thing for the next few months: free agent speculation and mock drafts.
Well, so far Packers media has taken things to another level. We can’t even stick to speculating about free agents. We’re now bound and determined to talk about guys who aren’t technically even available.
And why not? Myles Garrett wants to be traded, and D.K. Metcalf is probably available for the right price — as is almost every NFL player. It’s just a matter of whether or not the Packers want to swim in those expensive waters.
Asked his thoughts on trading for a veteran player last month, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst shrugged and said “You’d better be right,” arguing that making a swap for a star often involves paying twice. Acquiring Garrett or Metcalf would probably involve the double cost of not only draft compensation, but a new contract for either one. That’s a big ask for the usually conservative Gutekunst, though he’s been more than willing to spend for the right player in the past.
So the question becomes whether or not Garrett or Metcalf (or someone else) is the right player in Green Bay. Both would be big upgrades. Are they worth what it would cost?
