Cooper’s arrival is quite timely for the Packers.
It’s funny, in a way, that De’Vondre Campbell is in the news this week, because he’s arguably one of the reasons the Packers have Edgerrin Cooper today.
Cooper is the talk of the Packers’ corner of the internet this week after his star turn on Sunday Night Football, but he’s walking a road paved by Campbell. It was Campbell whose All-Pro season in 2021 showed exactly what the Packers had been missing at linebacker since who knows when. He was the playmaking heart of a defense that showed exactly how big of a difference high-caliber defensive play can make when partnered with the Packers’ typically strong offense, and you can make a pretty compelling case that Brian Gutekunst has been chasing that high ever since.
Following Campbell’s stellar season, Gutekunst re-signed him, then spent a first-round pick on Quay Walker, theoretically ensuring the Packers would enjoy not just high-level play at the position, but consistency as well.
It didn’t work out that way, of course, but you can see the thinking. Campbell’s injury woes started in 2022 and persisted throughout 2023, while Walker’s career has been a rollercoaster, swinging from the highs of big plays to the lows of boneheaded decisions.
That set the stage for Cooper, who arrived this spring to be Walker’s running mate in the same way that Walker was intended to be for Campbell. And now it looks like Cooper is taking off, blossoming immediately after his return from injury and giving the Packers a compelling defensive playmaker for the stretch run.
