How do you solve a problem like the dropsies?
Here at Acme Packing Company, we talked all throughout the 2024 season about the Green Bay Packers’ identity as a sloppy team that made a ton of mistakes, but that had the talent to often overcome them. Even so, it’s a bit jarring to see how significant one of those particular types of mistakes was, now that it has been called out after the season has concluded.
Specifically, that issue was dropped passes. Packers fans knew that drops were a major issue for this team, but seeing that they were one of the very worst teams in the NFL in dropping the ball underscores how many opportunities this offense missed out on. Jordan Love’s numbers probably look much better if the team dropped passes at a league-average rate as well.
It’s not like the young players have been consistent with their drop issues — after all, both Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks, the two biggest culprits in 2024, had very good rookie seasons in 2023. But when both players triple their drop numbers, it’s bad news for the offense as a whole.
Meanwhile, sloppiness on special teams is another area where this team has been trying (and failing) to clean up for over a decade. Rich Bisaccia arrived in Green Bay a few years ago, seemingly as the savior for those units, but he has yet to truly turn them around. One Packers writer thinks that it’s high time to look for an upgrade, especially given another bottom-tier performance overall from that group.
Let’s examine those issues and more in today’s curds.
