A big-name receiver is now officially a free agent.
The New York Jets have reportedly released wide receiver Davante Adams, adding a big name to the wide receiver free agent market a week before the league-wide spending spree is set to begin.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was the first to have the news, following up on his report yesterday that the Jets were “taking calls” for Adams. Apparently, whatever calls they got didn’t move the needle for the Jets, and now Adams hits true free agency for the first time in his career.

The Packers are an obvious suitor for Adams’ services, but whether or not those services actually make sense for the Packers is a different story entirely.
Let’s start with the easy part: the Packers need wide receiver help. Christian Watson is going to be out for most if not all of 2025, and the rest of the receiving corps was up and down in 2024. The team needs to add to their receiver room one way or another, and Adams would at least upgrade the overall talent in the room, even heading into his age-33 season.
But would he be the right kind of help? Even at his peak, Adams was never a field stretcher. His best season by yards per catch was 2016, when he averaged 13.3 per reception. That’s certainly nothing to scoff at, but it was nearly a decade ago and doesn’t exactly portend the kind of gamebreaking speed the Packers could use.
But he’d certainly be a weapon in the short and intermediate passing game, as always, and it’d be admittedly thrilling to see him back in green and gold this fall. Adams left the Packers ranked second all-time in receptions, fourth in receiving yards, and second in receiving touchdowns. He’d probably only need one more season to catch Donald Driver for first in receptions (he’s only 74 behind), and he’d have a realistic shot at taking the top spot in the other two categories over multiple seasons if he did, in fact, return to the Packers.
It’s all conjecture for now, of course, but a potential return to Green Bay just became a lot more possible
