The Green Bay Packers did not have an edge rusher or interior defender rank in the top 20 for ESPN’s pass-rush win rate during the 2024 season, but both Rashan Gary and TJ Slaton were viewed as elite players against the run.
In fact, both Gary and Slaton led their respective positions in run stop win percentage in 2024.
Per ESPN Analytics, Gary produced 63 “wins” across 170 run plays, good for an NFL-best run stop win percentage of 37.0. Slaton, meanwhile, had 87 “wins” across 191 run plays, good for an NFL-best run stop win percentage of 46.0.
Overall, the Packers defense ranked sixth overall in run stop win percentage at 33 percent.
In Year 1 with Jeff Hafley as the defensive coordinator, the Packers allowed only 4.0 yards per carry and ranked in the top 10 for total rushing yards allowed. Green Bay was especially good down the stretch, giving up fewer than 100 rushing yards in six of the last seven regular season games.
Gary and Slaton were big reasons why.
At Pro Football Focus, Gary ranked fifth among edge rushers in their run stop percentage. He finished with 23 stops — or a tackle creating an offensive failure — against the run. PFF credited Slaton with 19 stops against the run but viewed him as a poor run defender by overall grade (44.0).
By EPA/play, the Packers finished ranked eighth against the run.
Slaton, who has an expiring contract, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
