The Green Bay Packers lost all five games to the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions during the regular season but will get more shot at a big win when Matt LaFleur’s team goes to Philadelphia to play the Eagles — who finished 14-3 — for the NFC Wild Card Round on Sunday.
Any magical run to the Super Bowl must begin this weekend at Lincoln Financial Field.
Can the Packers get revenge for their Week 1 defeat in Brazil and knock out the second-seeded Eagles to open the postseason, or will Green Bay end the season on a three-game losing streak?
Here’s how the staff at Packers Wire believes the NFC Wild Card Round showdown with the Eagles will go down:
Zach Kruse: Eagles 24, Packers 23 (9-8)
The Packers can win this football game. They have the ingredients — a big-play creating quarterback, a tackle-breaking running back, a creative and experienced playcaller and a turnover-causing defense — to go into Philadelphia and beat the Eagles. At their best, the Packers can beat anyone in the field. I just lack the confidence in their ability to play four quality quarters without the self-sabotage that has defined so many of their biggest games and moments in 2024, especially on the road against one of the NFL’s best. The Eagles are as well-balanced as any team in football, and they rarely beat themselves. Like last January in Dallas, the Packers will need to run the ball consistently, play turnover-free, get a clutch performance from Jordan Love in the passing game and take the ball away from Jalen Hurts a couple of times to win. The Eagles are great, but this game is as much about the Packers’ ability to get out of their own way as it is about the Eagles’ talent. In the end, I won’t be surprised if one more self-inflicted error ends up dooming what could have been a special season for a young and mostly impressive Packers team on Sunday.
Brandon Carwile: Packers 31, Eagles 28 (12-5)
When the Packers and Eagles faced off in Brazil in Week 1, many believed it was a potential playoff matchup. Well, here we are. Green Bay fell 34-29 in that game but really beat themselves more than anything. That’s not to say Philadelphia isn’t a talented team. They possess one of the most dangerous offenses in the league and a finely tuned defense coached by Vic Fangio. Not many people are giving Green Bay much of a chance in this one, and that’s fine. Few people expected them to upset the second-seeded Dallas Cowboys last year at Jerry’s World. I think the Packers will pull off another upset and shock the NFL world in a high-scoring shootout on wild card weekend.
Brennen Rupp: Eagles 35, Packers 17 (14-3)
Last year the Packers went into Jerry’s World and did what they wanted, when they wanted against the Dallas Cowboys during Wild Card Weekend. Can they pull off another upset this week? This team fell flat on their face to end the season and don’t inspire much hope that they’ll go into Philadelphia and knock off a team with one of the best offensive and defensive lines in the league. If the Packers can play mistake-free football, they’ll have a shot. I just think they’ll face tough sledding on the ground and I’m not sure Jordan Love and an aerial attack that has struggled to stay in sync for an extended period of time will be able to carry the offense. Can they rediscover the mojo from last year’s playoff run? The ingredients are all there.
