The Packers season is over. A tough loss to a talented Lions squad clearly shows this team can’t make the playoffs. Compare this squad to last years team – this year the team has managed only a paltry six wins. Last years team had already made it to three.
Wait.
Ok so maybe last years playoff team had a worse record, but it’s not as though they were selling players off for draft picks. Unless you count the teams CB2 Rasul Douglas. But still, last years team, 2 minutes away from the Super Bowl didn’t reach the halfway mark of the season speculating on draft position and making bad Drake Maye photoshops. Actually I’m being told that happened too.
I know he can be a touchy subject, but as the former QB1 once said, fans need to R-E-L-A-X.
The first thing that people need to calm down on is the Jordan Love situation:
Does Love need to be more careful with the ball? Absolutely. It would also help however if the the wide receivers didn’t have outings like Sundays, which featured six drops. Six! Including two different TD passes against the Lions on the same drive.
This habit of self inflicted injuries is not just limited to the wideouts either:
In addition to the figurative injuries the team inflicted on itself, there’s the issue of the actual injuries.
Love’s injury situation is but it shouldn’t be underestimated how much the players out on Sunday affected the outcome. Alexander and Williams left a thin secondary completely depleted. No Josh Myers put the offensive line in an unfamiliar position. Green Bay held what’s been an explosive Lions offense to 17 points, at full strength who knows how it plays out.
Bouncing Back
What needs to happen next to keep the Packers season on track? First just get healthy. By all accounts and barring any set backs the Packers should come out of the bye with almost everybody ready to go.
Next, they need to go out and handle their next opponent. Who might that be? The Chicago Bears. You couldn’t ask for a better team to go out and get right against than the divisional rival you’ve owned for the last twenty years. How are things in Chicago?
When asked if Matt Eberflus had lost the team, Moore responded:
“I won’t say no”
If Green Bay comes out and loses to this Bears team, then we can talk about the long term vision for this Packers season. Until then just remember that this is a team that has been without it’s QB at 100% for half the season. Can’t get out of it’s own way with penalties and drops. And despite all of that sits at a solid 6-3 with a chance to get healthy and the perfect opponent on the schedule next.
