Alex McGough is going back to the Birmingham Stallions
James Larsen of UFL Newsroom reported on Thursday that former Green Bay Packers quarterback/receiver Alex McGough is planning on re-signing with the league’s Birmingham Stallions. McGough was signed to the Packers’ practice squad to end the 2024 season, but was one of a handful of players who did not sign reserve/futures contracts with the team following their playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
McGough originally signed with the Packers in 2023, following a USFL MVP season with the Stallions in the spring of that year. That season, McGough posted a 108.3 passer rating in the USFL with a yards-per-pass attempt average of 7.9 to go along with a 20:3 touchdown-interception ratio. He also added 403 yards on the ground and five touchdowns to a team that ended up winning the league’s championship.
In Green Bay, McGough was a reserve player who split time between quarterback, receiver and tight end in practice. In the 2024 offseason, he was officially transitioned to the receiver position for the Packers.
Now that a Packers reunion with McGough is off the table, Green Bay will enter the 2025 season with three quarterbacks: Jordan Love, Malik Willis and Sean Clifford.
If you’re interested in watching McGough play non-preseason football, the UFL will kickoff their 2025 season on March 28th. McGough’s first game back with Birmingham will be March 30th at 3:00 PM ET on ESPN. Last year’s starting quarterback for the Stallions, Adrian Martinez, has since signed with the New York Jets, opening up an opportunity for McGough to return to the lineup. With that being said, the Stallions’ backup, former top-100 NFL draft pick Matt Corral, has also re-signed with Birmingham, so there will be some competition for playing time. Last year, Corral started three games for the Stallions and actually replaced Martinez for a stretch in the postseason.
