Clements coached Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love
In his end-of-the-season press conference on Tuesday, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur told the media that he does expect at least one change to his coaching staff going into 2025, as quarterbacks coach Tom Clements is planning on retiring. Clements, who returned to Green Bay in 2022 after spending a year out of the league, coached Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love on the positional level during his time with the Packers.
Before Green Bay, Clements was a seven-time CFL All-Star following a college career at Notre Dame that featured a national championship season in 1973 and an All-American season for the quarterback in 1974. His coaching career started with stints with Notre Dame, the New Orleans Saints, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Buffalo Bills. His original stint with the Packers lasted from 2006 to 2016, a stretch where he worked up from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator to assistant head coach. In between his two eras in Green Bay, Clements spent two years as Kliff Kingsbury’s passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Arizona Cardinals in 2019 and 2020.
After the 2021 season, then Packers quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Luke Getsy left the team to become the offensive coordinator the Chicago Bears, opening up the reunion opportunity for Clements. With Clements out of the picture, LaFleur hinted that there might be some in-house candidates who could replace the 71-year-old.
Two candidates who make a lot of sense are Getsy, now working as an analyst for the Packers after his mid-season firing as the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders, and Sean Mannion, a former LaFleur quarterback who is currently serving as an offensive assistant with the team.
