Matt LaFleur says the team will be in uppers today (13th), full pads tomorrow. A walk through Thursday before flying to Denver, and then joint practice Friday against the Broncos before Sunday’s preseason match up. Wood
INJURIES:
Jordan Morgan working individual drills. Won’t see him in team reps today, but still lining up at right guard in pre-practice. Wood
Quay Walker dropped out of practice a little bit ago. No real concern over his status, though. 2) Matt LaFleur says MarShawn Lloyd will not practice after suffering a hamstring injury in Saturday’s game. He won’t practice today or this week? LaFleur: “He will not be practicing.” Schneidman
Tucker Kraft getting some 11-on-11 snaps today. [Kraft threw a block on one play, so it is not just individual drills. TGR] 2) Looks like Donovan Jennings and Ty’Ron Hopper back for at least the individual portion of practice. Bretl
Donovan Jennings (knee) and Dimitri Stanley (hamstring) also have returned. Hodkiewicz
New injuries: RB Jarveon Howard (ankle).
Dropped out of practice: LB Quay Walker (undisclosed), G/C Jacob Monk (undisclosed).
Returned to practice: WR Dimitri Stanley (hamstring), DE Deslin Alexandre (lower leg), LB Ty’Ron Hopper (ankle), G Donovan Jennings (knee), RG Jordan Morgan (shoulder).
Old injuries: RB MarShawn Lloyd (hamstring), CB Carrington Valentine (hamstring), DE Keshawn Banks (groin), LB Edgerrin Cooper (hip). Huber
PERSONNEL:
Starting OL: Walker – Jenkins – Myers – Rhyan – Tom. Bullard next to McKinney at S. Don’t see Q. Walker in team portion. Hopper is not doing team work and Cooper is still out so UDFA Ralen Goforth getting starting snaps. McDuffie – Wilson – Goforth. Bretl
Starters in team Love – Jacobs – Dillon – Musgrave Wicks – Doubs Walker – Jenkins – Myers – Rhyan – Tom. Defense: Gary – Wyatt – Clark – Smith – Wilson – McDuffie – Jaire – Nixon – Stokes Bullard – McKinney. Herman
Looks like Michael Pratt is QB2 today, at least for red-zone and end-of-practice drive. Dont know if it’s just experimenting or if related to performance or injury with Clifford, who I believe threw two picks today. Pratt hits Sims for a big gain down seam to set up the winning FG. [Anyway, the change happened mid-way through today’s practice (13th). TGR] Schneidman
OFFENSE:
During Saturday’s preseason opener in Cleveland, Monk played 61 snaps–the most on the offensive side of the ball for the Packers. Instantly, we saw Monk’s versatility, with him playing 11 snaps at left guard, 17 at center, and another 33 at right guard. I think naturally he’s more comfortable playing right guard but for us he’s played a lot more center. Again, trying to develop at all three of those inside positions for him to help us out.” Monk is also an excellent athlete, posting an elite Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 9.74 during the pre-draft process, and we saw those movement skills on display with his ability to cover multiple gaps. Over 29 pass-blocking snaps, Monk surrendered only one quarterback hit, according to PFF, and was routinely finishing blocks in the run game. Bretl
Saturday was the first time Sean Rhyan had played center in a game since high school. Hodkiewicz
A sweep to the right by Jacobs went nowhere because rookie safety Evan Williams – despite a 114-pound weight disadvantage – showed incredible physicality in beating guard Luke Tenuta. [I suspect Tenuta is trying to hold on to a practice squad spot at this point. TGR] Huber
Jordan Love connects on a go route to Christian Watson for 50 yards. Watson beat Eric Stokes deep and used his size to shield the #Packers cornerback to win with the ball in air. Third time Love has connected with Watson on a deep go in camp. Those two might torch defenses this fall. 2) Another go ball from Jordan Love, this one dropped over the shoulder perfectly to Jayden Reed down the left sideline for 40 yards. Love dropped a dime to Reed up the left seam that Reed couldn’t handle earlier in the period. Comes right back to him and connects for a huge play. [Love started hot but had his ups and downs later. TGR] Wood
Love with a gorgeous throw-him-open pass to Musgrave but 88 can’t hang on. Love tries to hit a seam throw in between the corner and safety to Reed but juuuuust off his fingertips. Love compete to Melton short on a quick out. Love had Davis on a deep post but a big overthrow. Herman [Here are some ups and some downs. TGR
Practice ends with Pratt hitting Sims for 29 yards in seam to set up Hale 46 yarder to end practice. 2) Pratt throws a – dare I say – laser to Jalen Wayne. Hodkiewicz
Is there a new number 2 QB?!?! Pratt getting both 2 minute drills. Pratt immediately slings two completions. Hicks and Sims, both over the middle. Spike Throw away on 3rd. Fg unit on. 2) 40 seconds left. Tie game. Ball at own 45. First and 10. 1’s up first. Love had Wicks over the middle but it was slightly behind him and Wicks had to slow down for it. In the meantime Jaire closed in a blink and broke it up. Incomplete to Doubs down the left sideline. Good pressure. Was basically a throwaway. False start offense. I believe Walker. Love tries to hit Dillon deep. Dillon a bit late locating it but it was too far in front anyway. Defense wins. 3) Love executes a gorgeous little drive. 22 seconds left. Opposing 18 yard line. No timeouts. Slant to Wicks for 16. Spike. Touchdown to Doubs who was wide open. 4) Same situation for Pratt. Incomplete in the end zone. Had a chance for a TD but overthrew iit out of bounds. Complete on the next play to Melton to the 6 and out of bounds. Slaton tipped pass at the line. Ballentine pbu outside. Some odd happenings on that drive. Was very disjointed. Herman
Ben Sims with a nice catch over the middle from Clifford and a nice little move after the catch. Two nice plays from Sims so far. 2) Oh my god. A SCREEN PASS THAT WORKED!!!!! Love hits Musgrave on the TE screen and Kraft takes out two defenders with a block. Nice pickup for the offense. Herman
On the next play, Love hit Bo Melton on the sideline against Jaire Alexander. After a rough performance on Saturday, Melton was back to being Melton. Melton added another catch during the offensive drill that started at the defense’s 18 with 22 seconds left. Huber
Offense does push ups to end the day. Huber
DEFENSE:
Goodness, Lukas Van Ness can turn the corner off the edge. Just blast past Kadeem Telfort to sack Michael Pratt. That looked like the defensive line equivalent of a layup. Wood
Gary was CLOSE to a sack on love and possibly got it. Love connects on 16 yd slant to Wicks. Clocks it and hits Doubs for the 2 yd TD on an out. Hodkiewicz
Linebacker Kristian Welch had a couple noteworthy plays. First, he leveled big running back Ellis Merriweather in the hole on the first play of the team-run period. Merriweather, who is a handful at 220 pounds, ran smack into No. 54 and hit the turf. Welch has done that a few times this summer. Later, Welch almost intercepted Jordan Love by getting in the passing lane on a pass directed to Romeo Doubs. Huber
Kristian Welch with a near pick of Love over the middle. Never saw it. Welch just dropped it. Herman [Same play as the Huber tweet just above, with a slightly different take. TGR]
An easy 2-yard TD from Jordan Love on an out route to Romeo Doubs. Haven’t seen much busted coverage in this camp, but that was one. Doubs wide open in the end zone. Jaire Alexander and Javon Bullard talking it over after the rep. [Herman described the same play thusly: Big mistake by rookie Javon Bullard who doesn’t line up right and leaves Jayden Reed uncovered. Reed takes it deep. Love finds him for a huge gain down the left sideline. Herman assigns blame and Wood didn’t. TGR] 2) Jordan Love’s deep ball is so electric right now, it works even when it doesn’t. Bally underthrew Bo Melton down right sideline, but rookie Evan Williams trucks him well before ball arrives. Easy DPI and about 40 yards. [Williams never turned his head. TGR] 3) Zayne Anderson picks off Sean Clifford. Pass went straight to him. Believe that’s now 18 picks for #Packers defense in camp. Wood
Coming off an impressive preseason game at Cleveland, Sean Clifford was intercepted by safety Zayne Anderson and cornerback Kalen King. Late in practice, rookie Michael Pratt took Clifford’s place during the final two periods. Huber [Bill Huber had a nice summary of Tuesday’s practice – click here to view it. TGR]
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Alex Hale just missed three field goals in a row from 47, 54 and 51. [Hale missed from 56 as well. All the misses were pretty darn long attempts, though I suppose it is warm out. TGR] He’s 4/8 on the day. Packers might be looking for another P-squad kicker if Joseph or Carlson gets claimed. Schneidman
MISCELLANEOUS:
Ben Sirmans says AJ Dillon’s pad level needed to be better in short yardage, but blocking was such it might not have made a difference. He believes Dillon is able to truck defenders, has seen him do it before. Just got bad looks in Cleveland. 2) RB coach Ben Sirmans on Emanuel Wilson: “He’s got really good feet. He’s big. He’s shown signs of having really good strength. It’s just a matter of him bringing everything together.” [Reasonably forthcoming and honest. TGR] 3) passing game coordinator Jason Vrable says RB coach Ben Sirmans pieced together all of Josh Jacobs’ targets after signing in free agency, and they watched them as a staff. The takeaway: “There’s not a route that he can’t run.” [Okay, just reasonably honest. TGR] Wo
Packers sign LB Chris Russell to bolster depth with injuries, per Aaron Wilson. [No corresponding roster move to make room for Russell. A team has 24 hours to make room. Kicker Alex Hale could be a candidate for waivers. TGR] 2) UFL star running back Nate McCrary is signing with the Green Bay Packers. [The Packers previously looked at him in training camp last year, per Paul Bretl. Now the Packers need to find two roster spots. Lloyd probably is going to be out for a week or more with a hamstring and Howard injured his ankle today. TGR] 3) “I think that’s big time when you have a guy at the center position that can reach,” said LaFleur. “I love the passion,” LaFleur adds. 4) Butkus mentions Rhyan’s strength and that he had some really good reps on Saturday. Mentions the need to continue finding that consistency. 5) I asked John Dunn about Wilson yesterday, who has seen his share of opportunities in the passing game the last week-plus: “He’s a good route runner. He’s got good feet, good hips, he does a nice job at the top of his routes.” Bretl
Perhaps that was part of the script and pure coincidence, but it was noteworthy seeing Pratt throwing the ball to the likes of Bo Melton and Malik Heath rather than undrafted rookies. If nothing else, it would seem to indicate the team is intrigued enough by Pratt to want to see him line up with and against better players. Huber
Vikings QB JJ McCarthy missed practice with knee soreness and tests revealed a meniscus issue that he’ll undergo surgery for, per me and Tom Pelissero. Rapoport
RB AJ Dillon’s message for all “keyboard warriors”: “I graded 98%, try to go out & do more than what I did — If you don’t live inside my house, your opinion is so secondary to me I couldn’t be bothered with it — you can’t do what we’re doing just enjoy & watch.” Cody Krupp
I thought Bill Huber had a nice article on Tuesday’s practice which you can read by clicking here.
