The Green Bay Packers have created a little bit of cap space with free agency on the horizon.
Per Field Yates, the Packers and outside linebacker Preston Smith have agreed on a restructuring of his contract. Smith will now get $10 million for this season while the Packers get an extra $2.4 million in cap space.
It’s that time of year for moves like this as teams try and wiggle their way out of salary cap trouble. They want to be cap-compliant and have money to spend once the new league year starts in mid-March.
Smith just wrapped up his fifth season with the Packers and he was once again one of their best players on defense. He compiled 48 total tackles, eight sacks, two forced fumbles, and four passes defended.
Before his time with the Packers, he spent the first four seasons of his career with the Washington Commanders. He’s a former second-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State.
For his career, he has racked up 410 total tackles, 66 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and five interceptions.
