The Green Bay Packers are hiring former New England Patriots assistant coach Jamael Lett as a defensive backs quality control coach on Matt LaFleur’s staff, according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports.
Lett, who played collegiately as a defensive back at Samford between 2006 and 2010, spent last year as a defensive assistant/quality control under Jerod Mayo in New England, meaning he worked alongside former Patriots defensive coordinator and new Packers defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington.
The connection likely led to the hiring. Lett and Covington played college football together at Samford, and they coached together at UT-Martin for a year.
Here’s what Covington said about Lett in 2020, via Akron: “Jamael is a tremendously hard worker. He loves the game of football, is a good teacher and learner of the game. His passion for the game, Jesus Christ, and making kids better men is second to none.”
The Packers had an opening in quality control after losing Anthony Perkins to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Perkins went from quality control in Green Bay under Jeff Hafley to defensive backs coach in Jacksonville for Anthony Campanile’s new staff.
Lett’s past coaching experience includes being a special teams analyst at North Carolina (2023), special teams coordinator and defensive assistant at South Alabama (2021-22), secondary coach at Akron (2020), secondary coach at Samford (2017-19), graduate assistant coach at Ohio (2016) and defensive backs assistant coach at UT-Martin (2015).
While a player, Lett produced 110 tackles, four interceptions, 16 pass breakups and two forced fumbles. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine from Samford in 2011 and a master’s degree from Tennessee Tech in 2012.
