While the Los Angeles Rams didn’t technically rule out quarterback Matthew Stafford for Week 9 against the Green Bay Packers, things are not trending towards him playing.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Rams’ current plan is for quarterback Brett Rypien to start on Sunday against the Packers. Stafford is dealing with a UCL sprain and is not expected to play unless he “surprises everyone and wakes up feeling ready.”
“No one would rule #Rams QB Matthew Stafford out, but sources say the plan is for QB Brett Rypien to get the start on Sunday vs the #Packers, per me and @TomPelissero. Unless Stafford (UCL sprain) surprises everyone and wakes up feeling ready, it’ll be Rypien,” Rapoport wrote.
In a follow-up post, Rapoport also pointed out that Rypien took all of the Rams’ first-team reps this past week and will be ready if called upon.

Brett Rypien isn’t likely to inspire a ton of confidence in Rams fans if he gets the start. He went 2-1 as a starter for the Denver Broncos between 2020 and 2022 but is very turnover prone.
Rypien went 5 of 10 for 42 yards in spot duty against the Dallas Cowboys this past week.
The Rams-Packers game will be played at 1 p.m. ET and will air on Fox.
