The Green Bay Packers placed rookie offensive lineman Trente Jones on the reserve/retired list Monday.
Jones signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent two weeks ago. The former Michigan standout recently participated in Green Bay’s rookie minicamp.
Green Bay also claimed defensive lineman Spencer Waege off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers.
Jones appeared in 41 games during five seasons at Michigan. While limited to 12 career starts at tackle, he assumed a heavier role during Michigan’s title run to replace the injured Zak Zinter.
“He’s a super-talented player with a bright future and he’s helped us in the moments when he’s needed to,” new Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said of Jones at media day before the national title game, per the Detroit News. “I’ve always talked about [how] it’s going to take more than five guys to win it all. We’re here now to this point, and those guys have stepped up in big moments.”
The Wolverines won three Big Ten titles, a national championship, and two Joe Moore Awards during his time at Ann Arbor. However, Jones wasn’t among the program’s 13 players drafted last month.
His reason for retiring remains unclear as of this writing.
