The Green Bay Packers are looking to move former first rounder Jaire Alexander. It seems that Alexander’s time in Green Bay may be up.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport announced on Wednesday that the Packers are would be willing to trade Alexander for the right price. Alexander is just 28 years old but has a lengthy injury history and has failed to stay on the field for Green Bay the last few seasons.
Jaire Alexander played college football for the Louisville Cardinals and was drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. Alexander was the first ever draft selection by Packer’s current general manager, Brian Gutekunst.
Recently at the 2025 NFL combine, Gutekunst was asked several questions regarding Alexander’s future. When asked if he could see Alexander being a part of the Packers in 2025, Gutekunst responded with “We’ll see. We’re working through that. He certainly could be. But we’ll work through that as we go.”
Jaire Alexander had an admirable rookie season in 2018. Alexander has been a Pro Bowler twice in his career and was a second team All-Pro selection in 2020. His talents even earned him the richest contract for a cornerback in NFL history in 2022.
Despite the promising start early on in his career, Alexander has struggled to consistently stay on the field. In 2021 Alexander missed the majority of the season with a shoulder injury.
Alexander bounced back in 2022 but went on to miss 10 games in the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The injury bug has not been kind to the now 28-year-old. When healthy, the flashes are still there but the contract is also of concern for the Packers.
The rich contract Alexander signed in 2022 rewarded him $84 million. His price tag sits at a $16.5 million base salary in 2025 and a whopping $18.15 million in 2026. His cap hit sits at $25 million for this upcoming season.
If the Packers were to release Alexander, they would save $6.84 million in cap space. Gutekunst acknowledged that the injuries have been frustrating stating, “He’s been an elite player for a number of years. I think the past few years have been very frustrating for him and, certainly, for us, too, just because you want players like that on the field consistently, and when you can’t be because of injuries, that’s a tough thing.”
When healthy, Alexander is one of the best in the game. Health has just not been on his side. With the current contract and the nagging injury history, it’s hard to imagine the Packers get top value in return for the 28-year-old.
