Luke Getsy has made his return to Green Bay
The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman was the first to notice that former Green Bay Packers quarterback coach and passing game coordinator Luke Getsy made his return to Green Bay this week. Getsy, who was head coach Matt LaFleur’s first choice to replace former offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in 2022, was allowed to leave the Packers for an offensive coordinator job with the divisional rival Chicago Bears — as the Bears tabbed him to call plays for the offense, a right LaFleur reserved for himself.
Since then, Getsy coached the Bears from 2022 to 2023 and was also the Las Vegas Raiders’ play-calling offensive coordinator in 2024 until his November 3rd firing after a slow start to the season. For what it’s worth, the Raiders lost five straight without Getsy coming out of their bye week until the last two weeks when they’ve been able to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints, armed with backup quarterbacks, in back-to-back games.
After practice on Friday, LaFleur stated that Getsy hadn’t been in Green Bay in person until this week but has been assisting the Packers’ defense by reverse engineering offenses for them for several weeks. LaFleur has used this “analyst” or “consultant” role with success in the past. This year, former New York Jets head coach and San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh has been helping the Packers’ offense with reverse engineering defenses. The same was true of former Detroit Lions defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Aubrey Pleasant in 2022. Pleasant now serves as the Los Angeles Rams’ assistant head coach and passing game coordinator.
Getsy’s return to Green Bay could be interesting. At some point, Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich, who has held the role since Getsy left for the Bears in 2022, is going to get poached by a team that is willing to give Stenavich a play-calling opportunity. Maybe Getsy will finally get his opportunity to be Green Bay’s offensive coordinator after all, if Stenavich leaves a vacancy before Getsy finds a new opportunity elsewhere.
