Allen is 2-7 as a starter but has never started for San Francisco
While Green Bay’s injury report hasn’t officially dropped for Friday’s practice, the San Francisco 49ers have already announced that a few of their key players will not be suiting up against the Packers on Sunday. According to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco will be without quarterback Brock Purdy (shoulder) or defensive end Nick Bosa (hip, obliques) when they play at Lambeau Field.
Purdy was able to finish the game last week in the 49ers’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He even began the week as a limited participant before undergoing an MRI on Thursday and dropping out of practice entirely on Friday. Shanahan noted that Brandon Allen, who has never started for him, will be the team’s starting quarterback this weekend. Allen previously posted a 2-7 record and a 78.0 passer rating with the Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals.
Bosa hasn’t practiced all week after going down with an injury against the Seahawks. If there’s any good news on the injury front for the 49ers, it’s that tight end George Kittle (hamstring) will play for the team this week after missing last week’s game.
Again, the Packers have yet to give cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) an injury designation at the time of this article. Head coach Matt LaFleur did rule out linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring), so Isaiah McDuffie and Eric Willson will be playing outside linebacker to the side of middle linebacker Quay Walker versus San Francisco.
Update:
The Packers announced that Alexander is out against the 49ers, meaning that Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine will more than likely be the starting outside cornerbacks on Sunday with second-round rookie Javon Bullard playing in the slot. The team also listed defensive tackle Colby Wooden (shoulder), who missed last week’s action, as questionable.
Beyond just Bosa and Purdy, linebacker Tatum Bethune, receiver Jacob Cowing, defensive tackle Kevin Givens and cornerback Charvarius Ward were all given “out” statuses by the 49ers. Center Jon Feliciano and left tackle Trent Williams were listed as questionable for the game.
