Both of Matt LaFleur’s coordinators with the Green Bay Packers completed interviews for head-coaching jobs in the NFL over the last two days. Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley completed an interview with the New York Jets on Friday, while offensive coordinator had his interview with the Chicago Bears on Saturday.
Hafley, in his first season as Packers defensive coordinator, led “incredible growth” on the defensive side of the ball for a team that finished in the top 10 in points allowed, yards allowed and takeaways. Hafley was previously the head coach at Boston College before leaving to take the defensive coordinator job in Green Bay.
Stenavich has experience as an offensive line coach, run game coordinator and offensive coordinator under LaFleur with the Packers. He’s been on LaFleur’s staff since 2019 and the offensive coordinator since 2022.
It’s unclear where Hafley and Stenavich stand as candidates. The Jets and Bears are both going through an exhaustive interview process to find their next head coach.
The Jets finished 5-12 in 2024 and could have major changes coming. Former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is 41 years old and has an uncertain football future. New York could be headed for a quarterback transition and might want an offensive-focused head coach to lead the way.
The Bears also finished 5-12 after upsetting the Packers in the season finale. It’s possible the Bears see a coach from the Shanahan/McVay/LaFleur tree as a good fit for quarterback Caleb Williams, the 2024 first overall pick who will be entering a crucial second season in 2025.
