San Francisco has brought up former starting safety Teshaun Gipson to the active roster
Despite ruling out cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring) on Friday, the Green Bay Packers didn’t make any sort of adjustment — including a practice squad elevation — on Saturday. According to league rules, teams are allowed to elevate up to two practice squad players per week, though, players are only allotted three separate elevations from the practice squad in a single season before their elevations are exhausted. From that point, a player would need to be added to the 53-man roster to participate in games.
Meanwhile, the Packers’ opponent, the San Francisco 49ers, was very active this weekend. They’ll be out quarterback Brock Purdy (shoulder) and defensive end Nick Bosa (hip, obliques), but the 49ers placed linebacker Tatum Bethune — who was ruled out on Friday — on the injured reserve, making room for the addition of safety Tashaun Gipson to the 53-man roster. Gipson, who started for the 2022-2023 49ers, was signed by San Francisco’s practice squad earlier this month after his release from Jacksonville, where he served a six-game PED suspension to begin the 2024 season.
Behind the Bethune for Gipson swap, the 49ers also elevated linebacker Jalen Graham, likely as a Bethune replacement, and cornerback Nick McCloud from the practice squad.
Because the Packers didn’t make a move at the linebacker position with Cooper out, this means the three-starter unit will only have four players available during the game: Quay Walker, Eric Wilson, Isaiah McDuffie and rookie Ty’Ron Hopper. Hopper has played every single snap he’s been on the field for this season as a special teamer, so he’s an unknown on the defensive side of the ball.
Green Bay only had one name to pick from on their practice squad at the linebacker position, but it’s a fairly notable player: former first-round pick Jamin Davis. The former Washington Commander was picked up by the Packers in Week 9, following an unsuccessful transition to the edge in Washington.
