The Badgers had one of their senior staff members arrested this past week.
It’s game week for the Wisconsin Badgers, but some off-the-field news has taken the headlines to start off the week. Senior football advisor Jack Del Rio was arrested early Friday morning for operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI), first offense, according to a report from BadgerExtra.
“Del Rio, 61, was driving in the area of South Segoe Road and Keating Terrace around 12:35 a.m. Friday when his vehicle hit a street sign, broke a fence and came to a rest in a yard, according to a Madison Police Department incident report,” wrote BadgerExtra’s Colten Bartholemew.
The Badgers were on a bye week this past week, as they had a week off before their major game against the No. 1 Oregon Ducks this Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium.
Regarding the incident, Wisconsin athletics released this statement:
“Wisconsin athletics is aware of the incident involving football staff member Jack Del Rio. We take matters like this very seriously and we are continuing to gather information.”
Del Rio was hired as a senior football advisor by head coach Luke Fickell this offseason and has been an insightful voice that has helped all around in meetings, according to players, while helping the coaching staff with the business side of things in the new world of college football.
He’s had an illustrious coaching career, spending time as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders, while having defensive coordinator stints with the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and Washington Commanders in the NFL prior to joining Luke Fickell’s staff this year.
