The Badgers added their first quarterback in the transfer portal on Monday.
The Wisconsin Badgers have secured a commitment from San Diego State transfer quarterback Danny O’Neil, he announced on Monday morning.
O’Neil, a true freshman this past season, started 11 games for the Aztecs, throwing for 2,181 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions, while completing 63.3 percent of his passes.
He had taken an official visit to Wisconsin this past weekend before making the decision to commit, and he’s the first quarterback to join the program from the transfer portal this offseason.
O’Neil, a three-star recruit from Indiana in the Class of 2024, had initially been committed to the Colorado Buffaloes, but flipped to San Diego State when offensive coordinator Sean Lewis got the head-coaching job with the latter school.
He now moves forward with three years of eligibility and gives the Badgers some much-needed depth and experience, as they only had three quarterbacks in their 2025 room: true freshman Mabrey Mettauer, and 2025 commits Carter Smith and Landyn Locke.
The Badgers are expected to add at least one more quarterback in the cycle, hosting Maryland Terrapins transfer Billy Edwards Jr. on an official visit this weekend as well, but O’Neil is a good addition that provides depth for the 2025 season after Wisconsin lost both Braedyn Locke and Tyler Van Dyke to the transfer portal.
Wisconsin has been loading up on talent defensively thus far, but now gets a major offensive piece at the most important position in the game.
