The Badgers are losing another starter in the secondary.
The Wisconsin Badgers are losing another starter to the transfer portal, as slot cornerback Max Lofy announced his intentions to spend his final year of eligibility elsewhere on Monday.
Lofy, a graduate student entering his sixth season of college football, began the year as Wisconsin’s slot cornerback after winning the job during spring camp.
He had missed the entire 2023 season due to injury, but stayed through the course and earned a big role for the Badgers defense in 2024.
He did cede playing time to safety Austin Brown, who was moved into the nickel role more with Wisconsin playing situational football, as the season went along, seeing less and less action in the slot.
The Badgers have seen a ton of departures this offseason from the defensive back position, as Lofy joins cornerbacks Amare Snowden, Jonas Duclona, and Jace Arnold, as well as safeties Kamo’i Latu, Braedyn Moore, and Justin Taylor to enter the transfer portal.
Wisconsin is already losing cornerbacks Nyzier Fourqurean and RJ Delancy, so they have some depth concerns at the position now with Lofy’s departure.
Lofy could’ve competed for the starting nickel role once again, but it was currently unclear how the secondary would shape out with some recent transfer news.
Graduate safety Preston Zachman announced he’ll return for his final season, while the Badgers still have Brown, who should take on a starting role.
In addition, Wisconsin landed Richmond transfer safety Matthew Traynor, which could move Brown to play more in the slot once again or add flexibility in the backend.
But, for now, Lofy will head elsewhere to play out his final season after spending the last five years at Wisconsin.
