What are the biggest questions surrounding the Badgers after the firing of OC Phil Longo?
It’s been a busy week for the Wisconsin Badgers, as they fired offensive coordinator Phil Longo after a 16-13 loss to the No. 1 Oregon Ducks on Saturday, marking the biggest move that head coach Luke Fickell has made in his short tenure in Madison.
Longo’s departure marks a major shift for the program, as he was Fickell’s highest-profile hire, bringing his coveted “Air Raid” style to Wisconsin. However, through 23 games, amid injuries and inconsistencies on the offensive end, the system never took off in Madison, leading to the offensive coordinator’s firing.
Now, with two games left, the Badgers are focused on making a bowl game this year, with a matchup against the Nebraska Cornhuskers coming up on Saturday. Tight ends coach Nate Letton is expected to be the team’s play-caller, while wide receivers coach Kenny Guiton is expected to signal plays in, although head coach Luke Fickell refused to confirm the details on Monday.
Looking elsewhere, the Badgers basketball team has started off 5-0 on the season, which includes a 103-88 victory over the No. 9 Arizona Wildcats that jumped Wisconsin into the AP Top 25 at No. 19.
Wisconsin most recently fended off a tough UT Rio Grande Valley team, narrowly beating them 87-84 on Monday evening to remain undefeated.
Additionally, Wisconsin’s volleyball team is on a five-match winning streak, standing at 20-5 on the season while winning 14 of their last 15 matches on the season. Things have absolutely turned around in Madison, and it’s a crucial weekend with the No. 16 Minnesota Golden Gophers coming to town on Wednesday.
Then, in arguably their biggest match left, they’ll take on the No. 2 Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday in a huge weekend between the two teams across multiple sports.
Every week, I’m looking to do an AMA session, where everyone can ask whatever questions they have about the Badgers in the comments, and I’ll answer each and every one over the next 24 hours.
