The Badgers wing hit a major milestone over the weekend with another dominant performance.
The Wisconsin Badgers have faced some adversity over the past two weeks, going 2-2 with close losses to the Maryland Terrapins and UCLA Bruins.
But, one player who has consistently put up numbers has been star wing John Tonje, who has scored at least 20 points and five triples on good efficiency over the four-game span, which comes after an uncharacteristic outing against the USC Trojans where the senior was held scoreless.
Tonje has been a major addition for the Badgers, as he’s been atop the NCAA leaderboard in categories like free throw makes (131), attempts (141), and overall percentage (92.5 percent). But, he’s also been near the top of the Big Ten in a couple of major categories.
In conference play, Tonje has shot 45.6 percent from three, which ranks third in the conference, and that has come on good volume, with the wing hitting 2.8 threes per game.
Looking specifically at the last two weeks, Tonje has averaged 25.3 points per game since January 21st, which ranks second in college basketball during that stretch. He’s also hit 21 threes in that period, consistently getting at least five per game, which ranks as the most in the country over the two weeks.
Hitting at least five threes in four straight games has put Tonje in elite company in Wisconsin history, as he became the first Badger to do so since the 2004-05 season against Northwestern over the weekend.
Tonje’s play this season has landed him on the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List as one of 50 Division I players in the country recognized for the honor. He’ll look to finish the regular season strong, starting with Tuesday’s contest against the Indiana Hoosiers, with tip-off set for 8:00 p.m. at the Kohl Center.
