Marquette didn’t get their second shot of the match until the 56th minute, so you get the idea here.
Okay, look, I’m not actually writing a recap for this Marquette men’s soccer game because there’s a lot to say about a 3-0 loss to #24 Akron, particularly when Marquette got outshot 14-6, and not when four of MU’s shots came after they were already down 2-0 and with 67 minutes already gone by.
We get it, Emil Jaaskelainen, the most prolific goal scorer in the country, is really great, and he proved it with two goals on four shots in 84 minutes of play on Saturday night. Message received, loud and clear.
Here’s the deal. I’m writing this recap just to point out that the loss has put Marquette on the brink of being eliminated from the Big East tournament. The loss leaves them at 2-3-2 in Big East play with one match to go. That gives them eight points, and that’s the sixth best non-division leader total in the league right now. The top six non-division winners get in the tournament.
In short, losing to Akron — as well as a bunch of other things, but you get the point — has put the Golden Eagles in a position to need at least a draw in their regular season finale or get help to make the conference tournament.
Up Next: And that match will be next week Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields. Creighton will be the opponent and the Bluejays will be coming in with wins in four of their last five matches after beating Butler 6-1 at home on Saturday.
