The best start in program history remains just three straight wins as the ranked Wolverines prevail in Ann Arbor
Last year, Marquette women’s lacrosse put up a pretty solid fight against #3 ranked Michigan at Valley Fields before the Wolverines scored a bunch at the end and prevailed. I feel like they deeply remembered that experience when Marquette returned the trip to Ann Arbor on Sunday.
Yes, Marquette scored first. Yes, that was the only goal for the first six minutes. Yes, that was the first shot of the game. Yes, Michigan committed a turnover on their first four possessions of the game.
And then the Wolverines stopped turning it over and they scored on their first shot of the game.
And then it was 5-1 Michigan three minutes later. And 7-2 at the end of the first quarter. And 13-3 at halftime. And 17-3 at the end of the third. And 22-5 at the final horn.
I feel like Marquette made them mad at some point. Maybe last year, maybe with the four early turnovers. Somewhere in there.
No one particular Michigan player went nuts, as three women had hat tricks. Meg Bireley led Marquette with a hat trick of her own, but it took her 12 shots to get there. Top 10 ranked team or not, MU’s going to have to find a way to score that doesn’t involve Bireley averaging over 12 shots a game, but that’s a discussion for down the road. Brynna Nixon went the full 60 minutes in net, which is good news after Mikayla Yang played against Cincinnati, but it does mean that Nixon’s three games worth of stats are kind of a mess now after making just five saves against the Wolverines.
Up Next: Marquette will return to action next Friday evening when they welcome Niagara to Valley Fields. First draw is set for 5pm Central, and FloSports will have the broadcast. The Purple Eagles are 1-2 on the year after losing 22-5 at #3 Northwestern back on February 18th, and they will visit Cornell on Tuesday afternoon before coming to Wisconsin.
