The Golden Eagles will hope to get a better result than last year’s 6-11 from mostly the exact same slate as 2024
I hope you liked the 2024 Marquette women’s lacrosse schedule….. because it mostly returns for the 2025 schedule.
Marquette will play 10 non-conference contests coming up next spring, and nine of the opponents were on the 2024 calendar. In fact, three of the opponents have been on the slate every year as far back as 2018, as long as you handwave the 2020 (ended early) and the 2021 (COVID protocols) seasons. Shouts to Cincinnati, as Marquette continues to keep the Bearcats on the schedule, continuing a streak that tracks all the back to Year #1 in 2013.
The season will open with road games in three of the first four contests as Meredith Black first takes her troops to Central Michigan for the opener on February 12th. I suspect that Mount Pleasant won’t be that pleasant if they have to play outdoors. Louisville is the home opener on Monday, February 17th, and if you can explain why they’re starting a game at Noon on a Monday, you’re smarter than me. After that is the trip to visit Cincinnati on February 20, and then MU gets their first taste of a 2024 NCAA tournament team when they visit Michigan on February 23. The Wolverines reached the Elite Eight last season by way of a win over #7 seed Notre Dame but fell to eventual national champion Boston College.
That Michigan game is actually the first of three straight against NCAA tournament teams, with both of the next two coming at Valley Fields. First it’s Niagara on February 28 after the Purple Eagles fell in the first round of last year’s national championship tournament, then it’s Northwestern on March 7th. It’s the first of three games this season against a non-conference opponent that they’ve never defeated, and the Wildcats are coming off a one goal loss to Boston College in the national championship game.
The next game is a roadie and another one of those oh-fer games as MU will try to topple Colorado for the first time in program history on March 11th. Detroit Mercy comes to Milwaukee on March 16th for MU’s last game before Big East play starts, but not their last non-conference game. A visit to Butler on March 22 opens up league action, but MU will host Arizona State for the third oh-fer game on the slate just three days later. It’s a little unfair to say Marquette has never beaten ASU, as the only meeting was in February 2020, but the Sun Devils did win it.
It’s a seven team Big East for women’s lacrosse, so MU will play three home and three road games in league play. They catch a break this year with Denver coming to Milwaukee on April 2nd. The Pioneers haven’t lost a Big East game since 2018, so when you get the reigning champs to come to your place, it’s a little bit of an advantage. Denver advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament last season, but were cut down by Northwestern at that point.
MU does have one last non-conference game to be played. I presume that the nature of the Big East schedule is such where MU caught a bye week in the last week of the regular season, and so Coach Black and her staff went ahead and scheduled a road trip to end the season. That’ll be a visit to Eastern Michigan on April 25th.
Here’s the full schedule for you!
