The Golden Eagles needed a Georgetown victory over UConn to cash in a tiebreaker with the Huskies and did not even come close to getting it.
With a seven team conference, someone had to sit out the Big East’s regular season finale on Saturday. That team was Marquette, as they wrapped up league play at 3-3 last week. This meant that they needed help from Georgetown in the final game of the year, as a Hoyas victory over UConn would tumble the Huskies to 3-3 as well and thus push Marquette into the #4 seed of the four-team Big East tournament.
They, uh, did not get that Georgetown win.
In fact, they did not come close.
It wasn’t great when it took Georgetown until the 3:59 mark of the second quarter to even score a goal against UConn up in Storrs, but that made the game 3-1 at the time. It’s not good but it’s not awful. It was 5-2 at the half, and Georgetown got the first goal of the third quarter to make it 5-3….. and then the wheels fell off. Flash forward to the start of the fourth quarter, and UConn was up 12-3. That’s your ballgame, although GU did cut that margin down to just 13-9 with 3:43 to play before finishing up with a 15-9 loss.
The Georgetown loss means the Hoyas are the #4 seed after creating a tie for second place at 4-2 between GU, UConn, and Villanova. Marquette ends up on the outside looking in at 3-3, bringing their 2025 season to an end with an overall record of 10-6, the third 10 win season in program history. Your official counter on Meg Bireley’s career scoring records as she wraps up her senior year: 207 goals, 259 points. She is the first Marquette player with 250 career points and the first with 200 career goals.
