The offensive problems from Wednesday’s game against Denver reappeared on a road trip to Philadelphia on Sunday.
FROM THE PREVIEW FOR SUNDAY’S MARQUETTE WOMEN’S LACROSSE GAME AGAINST VILLANOVA:
If “got outscored 19-3 in the final 45 minutes against Denver, including a combined 15-0 in the 2nd and 4th quaters” Marquette shows up, well, the Golden Eagles are probably in a lot of trouble.
Losing to Denver isn’t the issue. Getting outshot 30-13 over the final three quarters is no good. Committing 19 turnovers in the final three quarters is no good. Failing six clears in the final 45 minutes is no good. Getting beat on draws 17-9 in the final three quarters is no good.
THE FIRST HALF AT VILLANOVA ON SUNDAY
Outshot 22-8
Committed 12 turnovers
Failed three clears
Got beat on draws 10-3
Extrapolate all of those out for another quarter, increase each number by 50%, and that’s pretty much exactly what happened against Denver. It was 9-2 at halftime while all of that was going on, which I guess is technically better than the 19-3 that Denver threw out at Marquette for 45 minutes, but not really.
But also: Did Denver break Marquette?
Things got worse for Marquette after intermission as Villanova put up a 4-1 burst across the first five minutes of the period and kicked in the running clock at 13-3. It didn’t stay running for very long, but MU only got it within seven at the end of the quarter, 14-7, and whatever slim chance of a comeback evaporated as neither team scored in the final 11 minutes of the game.
Marquette is now 2-2 in Big East play and has just two conference games left to put themselves into the Big East tournament.
Up Next: That stretch of midweek and weekend games is over for the Golden Eagles as they’ll return to action next weekend. They’ll have a home game on deck, as UConn comes to town on Saturday, April 12th, for a Noon Central time start. FloSports will have the broadcast. The Huskies are 9-4 overall this year and 2-1 in Big East action after breaking Denver’s Big East winning streak on Sunday with a 14-13 victory in overtime in Storrs.
