I think it’s rude to lose ground when you lose a road match to a top 10 team, but that’s me.
This past week, Marquette volleyball lost to #6 Creighton in Omaha. This feels like a thing that very good teams would do, much less teams struggling to earn votes in the AVCA top 25 poll.
And yet, even though it’s not a surprising result, that 3-1 defeat still cost the Golden Eagles some votes in Monday’s newest poll. I want to know who these voters are who thought Marquette was a top 25 team last week, watched them against Creighton, and then said, “nope, I was wrong.” Come on now, people. In any case, the Golden Eagles are now the unofficial #29 team in the country after earning 21 points this week. They’re in the same spot as last week, just with less points. Texas A&M is in front of them with 45 points, while Virginia is behind Marquette with 10 points.
There was no movement in the top 11 in the AVCA top 25 this week. Noted Marquette opponent Pitt is still #1 with every first place vote, Stanford is #5, Creighton is #6, Kansas is #9, Wisconsin is #9. Dayton continues to chug along with their loss to Marquette as their only loss of the season, so they’re up one spot to #22 this week.
Marquette returns to action when they hit the road this weekend. They’ll visit St. John’s on Friday evening, and then move on to face Villanova on Sunday. The Wildcats are 4-0 in Big East play so far, while St. John’s found a way to beat Marquette twice a year ago.
