The Golden Eagles slipped a little bit from last week, but they’re still on the national radar.
You’d think that two wins, regardless of quality of opponent, would keep you in the good graces of top 25 poll voters.
We can’t say that’s true, because YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles women’s volleyball team sliced apart UConn and Providence over this past week, and ultimately lost ground in the AVCA top 25 voting. They had 39 points last week, and now they’re down to 29 points in Monday’s newest rankings. That still makes MU the unofficial #29 team in the country just like they were last week, right between Arkansas (33 points) and Utah (20 points) this time, so they didn’t lose ground relative to any other teams. They’re also a long way from the top 25, as Washington is #25 with 154 points this time around.
Pitt has solidified their spot as the best ranked team on Marquette’s schedule as well as their grip on the #1 ranking. The Panthers picked up all 61 first place votes, up one from last week, and that will probably hold steady now until they find themselves on the losing end of a match for the first time in 2024.
Just like last week, the top 10 is crawling with Marquette opponents. Stanford dropped two spots to #5, Creighton held steady at #6, Kansas moved up one spot to #8, and Wisconsin slipped two spots but stayed in the top 10 at #9.
Dayton is the only team on MU’s slate this season that’s earning votes and isn’t in the top 10. The Flyers moved up one spot this week to #23, and please remember: Marquette currently possesses UD’s only loss of the year.
Marquette returns to action on Tuesday night with a very big match. They’ll be in Omaha for the yearly road contest against Creighton. That one’s always a big one for Big East standings reasons, but it’s got some extra heat with the Bluejays at #6 in the country right now. First serve is set for 6pm Central time, and FS1 will have the broadcast for you.
