A smidge more votes than last week heading into the final week of the regular season for the Golden Eagles.
We knew ahead of time that Marquette volleyball wasn’t going to light the world on fire with two wins this past weekend. That’s the nature of playing two of the teams in the back end of the Big East standings. So it’s not a surprise that the Golden Eagles didn’t suddenly vault upwards in the new AVCA top 25 poll and voting that came out on Monday afternoon.
But! They did pick up three new points worth of votes this week. Now Marquette has 11 points, an improvement over three from a week ago. They’re just one point behind Miami and two in front of the Western Kentucky team that the Golden Eagles beat waaaaaaaaaay back in mid-September. All of that makes Marquette the unofficial #30 team in the country right now, but they’re also a loooooong way away from the top 25, as Missouri’s holding down the last ranked spot with 133 points.
The top 10 of the AVCA poll is the same as it was last week as no one slipped around in the rankings. Thus, it’s the same cast of characters from Marquette’s schedule as it was a week ago: #1 Pitt, #5 Creighton, #6 Wisconsin, and #7 Stanford. Kansas improved their lot in life, shifting up one spot to #11 this week. Dayton also bumped up one spot to #18, and yes, Marquette is still the only team to beat the Flyers this season.
Marquette wraps up the regular season this coming weekend with visits to Xavier and DePaul. Friday’s match against the Musketeers is on FloSports at 5pm Central, while Sunday’s contest against DePaul is a Marquee Sports Network exclusive at Noon Central. Yes, that means no one outside of Chicago can watch it, because DePaul is very mean.
