Things were tolerable against Western Michigan on Sunday until they weren’t in a 3-0 loss.
Look, no one likes getting outshot 7-2 in the first half of a soccer match, but when only two of those shots are on frame and Marquette goalkeeper Elise Krone stops both of them, you find a way to live with yourself when the match is scoreless at intermission.
When Marquette didn’t manage a shot for the first 18 minutes of the second half as Western Michigan fired off three more of their own, well, it was starting to turn into a real problem for the Golden Eagles in Kalamazoo.
And then, just over seven minutes apart, Jen Blitchok and Jaden Peck found the back of the net. 2-0 Broncos, Marquette has attempted just three shots in 70 minutes, and hoooooooboy, it’s a little bit worrying.
Blitchok tacked on another goal in the 80th minute to provide us with the final 3-0 margin, and Marquette drops to 0-3-1 on the season.

By the final horn, Marquette had attempted just five shots in the entire match. Yeah, they put a season high percentage of those shots on frame…. which means they put two shots on frame in the entire match to hit 40% for the first time this season. Woo. We’re going to talk more about this when we get back to previewing Marquette’s next matches, that’s for sure.
Up Next: Speaking of next matches, the Golden Eagles will be at Valley Fields for their next two over the next week. First up is Illinois-Chicago for a 7pm Central kick on Thursday, August 29, then it’s Minnesota on Sunday for a 1pm Central time start. The Flames are 1-2-0 this season after a 2-0 road loss to Purdue on Sunday, while the Gophers used a 4-1 defeat of St. Thomas to move to 2-0-0 so far.
