The Golden Eagles let the game get out of control and and so the Pirates beat them in Milwaukee for the first time in 15 tries.
As I watched the second quarter of Wednesday night’s Marquette women’s basketball game unfold at the McGuire Center, I realized one of two things was going to happen.
The first was that Seton Hall was going to beat Marquette, either by a lot or by a little, and thus pick up the first ever win in Milwaukee over the Golden Eagles in 15 tries.
The second was that Marquette was going to find a way to beat Seton Hall anyway and deny SHU head coach Tony Bozzella that long sought after victory in Wisconsin.
While it got interesting late, Marquette ultimately didn’t have enough time to rally back from down 16, and ended up with a 58-52 defeat to drop to 3-3 in Big East action.
Back to the second quarter. Actually, no, back before that. Seton Hall opened the scoring in the game, but Marquette tallied the next nine for a 9-2 lead just past the midway point of the opening frame. Faith Masonius answered immediately on the other end to jumpstart a 9-3 burst for the visitors to end the quarter. And so, for a nearly nine minute long run as the game continued on into the second quarter, Seton Hall went on a 21-3 run thanks to starting the next period on a 12-0 burst. Heck, let’s get crazy with it and call it 28-6. Pirates up, 30-15, with 2:15 left in the half.
That, right there, is pretty much your ball game.
Did Marquette win the rest of the game 37-28? Sure did. Heck, we can go one step further. Seton Hall went up 16 with 8:33 left in the third, 39-23. So, that’s a 29-19 Marquette advantage for the final 18:33. None of this matters because MU let the Pirates shoot 10-for-16 from the field in the second quarter. The defense that we’ve come to expect from Cara Consuegra’s team this year? Absent in the second period.
And yet.
Lee Volker hit a three-pointer with 2:33 to go that made it 55-52. This game was there for the taking, Marquette definitely had a chance to go get it with that much time left. Heck, they could have had more time left, but as pleasant as it is to force a shot clock violation, Marquette did that three times in the fourth quarter when Seton Hall was maybe just kind of okay with wasting the full 30 seconds just so MU didn’t get to use them.
But 2:33 is all they had, and as you can see from the top of the page, Marquette did not score again. The flurry was over, and Seton Hall sealed up the victory.
Lee Volker is your leading scorer for this one, getting 13 points on a not-so-great 5-for-13 shooting night, but she was 3-for-6 from long range. Jaidynn Mason was MU’s only other double digit scorer, and she added 11 points while also having a team high in assists with four. Halle Vice led MU’s rebounding effort with eight.

Up Next: From here, Marquette will take a week off as they’re scheduled for a bye this weekend. Their next game will be next week Wednesday when they visit Picked Third Providence for a 10am Central time start in Rhode Island for whatever reason. FloSports will have your broadcast. The Friars are 9-11 overall this year and 2-5 in Big East play after getting a Wednesday night 51-45 victory at home over Xavier.
