Marquette is the #4 seed, which means a quarterfinal game against Villanova and a possible semifinal game against UConn.
In what I thought was a surprise, the Big East announced the locked and set bracket for the 2025 Big East women’s basketball conference tournament on Sunday at the conclusion of the DePaul/St. John’s game. We’ll get to the surprise part in a second, but the end result is YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles are the #4 seed in the tournament. That earns them a bye to the quarterfinal round, where they will face #5 seed Villanova in their first game of the event.
So, the surprise.
I thought that we needed to find out if Villanova picked up the season split with #2 seed Creighton before the bracket locked in place. The win would move the Wildcats into a tie with Marquette in fourth place, and since VU went 1-1 against the Jays and Marquette went 0-1, that’s clearly going to break the tie after the Golden Eagles and the Wildcats split their own series.
But nope. As I type this, Creighton is up 31-25 on Villanova at the half. Sure, that result means MU is obviously the #4, but it’s not like VU can’t overcome a six point lead in the next 20 minutes, y’know? So apparently there’s a tiebreaker that’s supersedes “record against 1st place, continue downwards until you find an advantage” and that clearly tilts towards Marquette no matter what Nova does in this game.
It’s not like it’s THAT big of a deal, we’re talking about flipping between two seeds that face each other in the quarterfinals anyway. Anyway. Don’t know what that tiebreaker is, but I’m not going to say no to Cara Consuegra and her team officially getting locked in to finishing 4th in the Big East after being picked to finish 10th, y’know?
That Marquette/Villanova game is scheduled for 1:30pm Central time at the Mohegan Sun Casino arena, and FS2 will have the broadcast. The Big East Digital Network on FloSports will carry the opening day tripleheader before handing off the tournament to Fox Sports. FS1 will carry the UConn quarterfinal on Saturday before FS2 takes it the rest of the way. Fox gets both semifinal games on Sunday, and FS1 will broadcast the title game on Monday night.
