The Golden Eagles’ problems compounded on them in the second period against the Buffaloes, and that was that.
You ever see Resident Evil? Not the video game, the 2002 movie by Paul W.S. Anderson, starring Milla Jovovich? You know the scene where they hack a computer to open a door at the end of a hallway, and then that sets off an alarm, and then lasers start attacking the tactical team, and there’s different laser behaviors, and the lasers are picking off the three team members in the hallway one by one, and the tactical leader guy is the only one left, and he’s waiting to find out what the lasers do next, and there’s a big mesh grid that totally wrecks him before the computers guy turns it back off again?
I’m not gonna embed it for gore reasons, but I’ll link to it here for you.
Anyway, that was Marquette’s trip to Boulder for a women’s lacrosse game against Colorado.
Part 1: The door hacking device totally works fine!
That’s Marquette taking a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes.
Part 2: The door closes back up, and laser #1 is headed their way and takes out tactical team member #1.
That’s Colorado scoring the last three goals of the first quarter while ending up outshooting Marquette 14-3. MU didn’t get a single shot off in the final nine minutes of the frame, and they committed seven turnovers, too. The turnovers are kind of like Team Member #1 getting taken out because she didn’t listen and get down when the laser was high in the air. Completely her own problem.
Part 3: Laser #2 starts some chicanery that catches the second tactical team guy off guard.
That’s Colorado scoring the first five goals of the second quarter to take an 8-2 lead.
Part 4: The tactical team leader grabs the bars on the ceiling and dodges the laser, even though the laser still slashes his dangling knife in half.
That’s Marquette breaking up the 8-0 Colorado run with a goal from Meg Bireley.
Part 5: Laser #3 turns into a mesh that takes out the tactical team leader.
That’s Colorado scoring the final two goals of the half to make it 10-3 at the break, as well as the 10-2 shots advantage for the Buffaloes in the quarter.
Part 6: The computer guy shuts off the laser defense weapon right after the team leader gets taken out.
That’s Marquette and Colorado playing a 5-3 lacrosse game in the second half. Little too late to make a difference here.
Final score: 15-6, mostly because MU got outscored by six in the second quarter. Feels like Colorado definitely had something to prove after their 1-4 start against five ranked opponents, huh?
Meg Bireley ended up finishing with a hat trick, and CJ Meehan ended up with a goal and an assist to be the only other Golden Eagle with more than one point in this game.
How about some highlights, such as they are — that jump from 2-0 to 8-2 in the video is a whole thing — courtesy of GoMarquette.com and ESPN+?
Up Next: Marquette will return home for their next game. They will host Detroit Mercy on Sunday, March 16, and first draw in the Valley Field seasonal bubble is set for 11am Central time. FloSports will have the broadcast there. The Titans are 3-3 on the season after a 13-9 win over Presbyterian back on Friday, and they will host Lindenwood on Wednesday afternoon before coming to Milwaukee.
