The Golden Eagles rallied from down 10 out of the gate in the first quarter, had a lead in the fourth…. and lost anyway.
It really looked like Marquette women’s basketball was going to make Butler’s 10 point lead late in the first quarter mean absolutely nothing.
The Bulldogs got off to starts of 8-0 and 16-6 on Sunday afternoon, but MU cut the lead as far as three late in the period. The Golden Eagles kept right on moving, running up an 18-5 run to start the second quarter and take a five point lead. Butler fired back as the game started to get a little rollercoastery, but a Kennedi Perkins bucket right before the horn left MU out in front by one after 20 minutes.
Marquette by four on the first bucket of the third quarter, a three from Olivia Porter, and a Jaidynn Mason bucket in transition made it a five point lead. Then eight straight for Butler to tip the lead back to them, and the two sides traded points back and forth for the final four minutes of the period. End result: Butler 52, Marquette 49, with 10 minutes to go.
Butler’s lead grew to six with 7:32 to play, and then the rollercoaster kicked back in. 11-2 run by Marquette, and the Golden Eagles were sitting up three, 64-61, with 1:45 left to go.
All they had to do was either trade buckets with Butler or come up with stops. One way or another, just close the door. Went through alllllll of that rollercoaster, just finish the job.
Lily Zeinstra got loose for a three.
Olivia Porter and Skylar Forbes couldn’t connect on an entry pass, tie up, jump ball, Butler ball.
Zeinstra gets sent to the line with less than a minute left, she split the pair.
Porter gets sent to the line, splits the pair, tie game, 37.9 to go.
Sydney Jaynes spins through the lane and scores around Halle Vice, Bulldogs by two, 11.9 to play.
Marquette gets a pretty solid entry pass to Forbes, she spins through traffic in the lane…. and her shot just doesn’t go down.
Multiple points to take control of the game there for Marquette, or even just don’t let Butler get out to that early lead….. but ultimately, they couldn’t get the job done when they needed it done.
Skylar Forbes finished with 14 points, but on 3-for-10 shooting. Halle Vice got to 12, and both Olivia Porter and Lee Volker added 11.

Up Next: Not being able to wrangle this one home has a chance to come back and bite Marquette. They’ll be back in action on Wednesday when they take on Seton Hall in a road contest. Tipoff in South Orange is set for 6pm Central time, and FloSports will have the broadcast. The Pirates won the first meeting of the season in Milwaukee, which was SHU’s first ever road win in the series. Seton Hall is 4-2 since facing Marquette, with the losses coming on the road against both Connecticut and Creighton.
