The sophomore’s 5-under opening round leads all players through 18 holes.
I don’t know if anyone had Marquette sophomore Mason Schmidtke as the Big East’s individual leader after one round of the 2025 Men’s Golf Championships, but that’s where we are. The Sheboygan native got off to a good start with two birdies on his first three holes and that helped propel him forward to a five-under 67 to lead all players through one round at Callawassie Island Club in South Carolina. He has a one stroke lead on Barnes Blake from Georgetown and Derek Tabor from Butler.
Schmidtke’s round pushed Marquette to a team score of -3 after one round of action in in the three round tournament. That leaves the Golden Eagles tied with Butler through 18 holes and two strokes ahead of Xavier as the only other squad that is shooting under part so far. Johan Widal was the only other Marquette golfer to put up an under-par round, shooting a -1. As a team, Marquette struggled on the back nine of the course, with MU’s five players combining for 11 holes over par. Three of them were double bogeys, two of which went to Max Lyons on 13 and 14, only to be followed up with a bogey on 15 as he finished the day at +5 to end up as Marquette’s high round of the day.
Play resumes on Sunday, with Marquette set to tee off at 9:25 am Central time while paired with Butler and Xavier for the second round. You can follow the live leaderboard right here or stream the day’s action at GKLive.TV. It’s free, but you do have to create an account to check out the static cameras on 12 of the 18 holes.
