The Golden Eagles have a new all-time points leader, and his name is Bobby O’Grady.
Bobby O’Grady is ahead of schedule.
He started his senior season with Marquette men’s lacrosse 19 points behind Ryan McNamara’s career record in that department. In the preseason, I did the math and figured that O’Grady was on pace to surpass McNamara in Game #7 of the season.
Tuesday afternoon was Game #6 of the season, and, well, early in the second quarter against Bellarmine, O’Grady assisted on this Carsen Brandt goal to put Marquette up 6-3. That was #153 in his career, and Bobby O’Grady is now YOUR Marquette all-time scoring champ.
Following a career high-tying eight points, Bobby O’Grady is the Marquette career points leader with 157.

It came as part of a 19-11 win over Bellarmine, so that’s an added bonus, and it’s particularly notable that O’Grady got his record breaker on an assist. He already broke McNamara’s goals record last season, so this season was going to be spent eclipsing the distance created by the assists that McNamara had in his career. On top of that, it’s fitting that O’Grady got the record on an assist on a career day for him in that category. The feed to Brandt was his third assist of the game already at that point, and O’Grady’s previous career best was two helpers in a game. He ended up with five assists by the end for a game high eight points overall.
The goal he assisted on was a pretty notable one relative to where the game was going, too. Marquette opened up a 3-0 lead on Bellarmine in the first six minutes of the game, but the score was 4-3 Golden Eagles at the end of the first quarter. It’s like the two teams agreed to split the quarter in half. Marquette reasserted their point of view right out of the gate in the second quarter with Will Foster scoring just 43 seconds in, and Brandt’s goal with O’Grady’s record breaking assist came less than 90 seconds into the frame. Those two got Marquette rolling as they ended up with a 6-1 run to start the second quarter and jump out to a 10-4 lead with 4:42 to play before halftime.
As you can see from the score at the top of the page, Marquette never ran away with this game from there. Bellarmine clawed two goals back before MU’s Hayden Hiltz stuck one in in the final minute of the half to make it 11-6 at the break, and as the clock passed the two minute mark in the third quarter, Bellarmine had closed the gap to 11-9.
That was the closest things would get to a danger zone for the Golden Eagles as they scored twice in the final 92 seconds of the quarter and twice again in the first three minutes of the fourth. Noah Snyder’s strike made it 15-9, giving MU some wiggle room, and BU’s final goal of the game came with 8:47 to play. John Alie’s goal made it 16-11 Marquette, and a pair of markers from Matt Caputo surrounding another goal from Foster provided MU some insurance that they probably felt better having than going without.
It wasn’t a 100% dominant performance from the Golden Eagles, but it was one that they grabbed control of after the first quarter and (mostly) completely held onto the rest of the way. Sometimes, the best result is one where you just keep putting in the work and good things keep happening, and that’s kind of what this was for Marquette.
O’Grady’s eight points are the highlight seeing as he broke the team record and all, but Nolan Rappis had five goals and an assist for a pretty nice afternoon in the seasonal bubble, while Will Foster had two goals and two assists, and Noah Snyder had three helpers in addition to that goal early in the fourth quarter. Lots of points to go around when you put 19 on the scoreboard, y’know? MU’s defense gave up a pair of six point days to Ezra Moore and John Alie, so not everything was perfect. Lucas Lawas only made five saves on 16 shots on goal in 55 minutes of action for Marquette, so there’s things to work on. That’s the head coach’s dream, right? Sizable margin of victory, things to emphasize for next time?

Up Next: A little bit of time off! This was a quick turnaround game for Marquette after their visit to Harvard over the weekend, but they won’t play again this coming Saturday. They’ll be back in action the week after, Saturday, March 15, when they head out west to face Utah. First draw on that one is scheduled for Noon Central, and we’ll keep an eye on a possible streaming situation as we get closer. The Utes are 1-4 on the year after winning 19-13 at then-#19 Ohio State to start the season. They play at Dartmouth this coming Saturday before the Golden Eagles come to town the following week.
