The Golden Eagles led 2-1, and it was all downhill from there.
If you’re Marquette men’s lacrosse head coach Jake Richard, do you even pretend to try to spin this in a positive direction for your team? Do you talk to them about how they scored back-to-back goals against the #1 team in the country to take a 2-1 lead less than four minutes in? Do you try to claim that their 6-3 deficit after 11 minutes against #1 ranked Notre Dame was manageable at the time and they just need to work on the little things to get better?
Or do you just throw the film in the garbage can because Marquette got outscored 21-6 in the final 56:06 of their weekend trip to South Bend? Do you look at the 12-1 run that the Fighting Irish put up bridging the first and second quarters and say “we’re just not on that level, we can’t learn anything from this?” Do you say “wow, we scored one even strength goal for the entire second half while getting outscored 9-3 after trailing 13-5 at intermission, this stinks,” and just move on to whatever’s next?
I thought that the big key for this game was to not look like the same team that got beat 14-1 by Michigan. That didn’t happen, as the two-time reigning national champions blew the Golden Eagles out of the Loftus Center.
Up Next: Marquette will be back at Valley Fields next weekend for a contest against Cleveland State. First draw on February 22 is set for Noon Central, and FloSports will have the streaming broadcast. The Vikings lost to Notre Dame 24-6 on Wednesday evening after taking a 14-4 loss to Ohio State in their opener, and they’ll host Bellarmine on Tuesday afternoon before coming to Milwaukee.
