The Golden Eagles don’t muster much offense in their loss to open Big East play.
After Marquette women’s soccer ran wild with goals in the second half against St. Thomas on Thursday, there was a teeny glimmer of “hey, maybe the MU offense has turned a corner here!”
That glimmer is gone after Sunday’s Big East opener against Butler.
The Bulldogs snagged the 1-0 victory, but the final tally isn’t the big story for Marquette here. No, that comes in the format of the shot totals in the first half and then the game as a whole. Overall, the Golden Eagles were outshot 17-5 on Sunday afternoon, and in the first 45 minutes, those numbers are 13-3.
Butler scored on their second shot of the game, and it would take the Golden Eagles until the 33rd minute to get their second official shot on the board.
The silver lining here is that Elise Krone made that final score look much nicer than it could have. Krone made 10 saves in the match, with seven of them coming on BU’s other 12 shots of the first half. If she’s not up to the task right out the gate — Krone had five saves in the first 34 minutes — then MU gets buried underneath pretty quickly.
And the goal that Krone did let in? Can’t really fault her for it.

Up Next: Marquette will have a week off to think about things, and then they’ll welcome Creighton to Valley Fields. The Bluejays are currently 3-3-1 on the season after a 1-0 loss to Georgetown on Sunday. Creighton will have to host Villanova on Thursday before coming up to Milwaukee.
