The Golden Eagles needed a positive result to get into the Big East tournament and got the exact opposite as the regular season finale became the season finale.
“Alright lads, winning would be super great for us and get us in the Big East tournament no doubt. A draw would be less fun, but we’re still getting in if that happens. Alright? Let’s get out there and get it done!”
I presume David Korn’s pregame speech for Marquette men’s soccer went something like that.
Aaaaaaaaaand then Creighton scored in the 11th minute on the first shot by either team in the game.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand then Creighton scored on their third shot of the game before Marquette attempted one at all. 2-0, both from Jackson Castro, all before the game was 19 minutes old.
Good night, everybody!
*ahem*
Somehow, it did actually get worse for Marquette, as Creighton scored about three minutes into the second half…. and then again 3:30 later. Woo. 4-0 in a gotta-have-it regular season finale in the 52nd minute. It’s not great!
Your final from Valley Fields, as well as from the 2024 season: Creighton 5, Marquette 2. The Bluejays even went so far as to kick dirt into Marquette’s face by scoring precisely 16 seconds after Gabe Anguil made it 4-2 in the 82nd minute. I know that a two goal margin is the most dangerous lead in soccer (or is it hockey? Whatever) but that’s just being mean, Creighton.
Marquette goes into the offseason after posting a losing record in David Korn’s first season in charge, finishing up at 6-7-4 with a 2-4-2 mark in Big East matches. It’s not what you want, but hey: Six wins means that David Korn is already not last amongst Marquette’s head coaches in that department. Barry Fagan was the program’s first ever head coach, and MU went 5-1-2 in his only season in charge.
