Yes, the loss to Villanova was no fun, but it wasn’t bad enough to knock the Golden Eagles out of the rankings.
Yes, yes, we all have questions about what’s going on with YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles men’s basketball team over the last few weeks. What’s not a question is whether or not they’re still in the Associated Press top 25 this week. The new poll is out on Monday afternoon and while the Golden Eagles have fallen five spots from last week, they’re still in the rankings at #21 right now.
This is the 48th consecutive week that Marquette has been in the AP top 25 after appearing in all 21 polls a year ago. We have not seen a run like this in the Associated Press poll since the 1970s, and hooooooooboy, we’re in for a treat if Shaka Smart gets to this mark. This is the longest AP run since MU appeared in every ranking from December 29, 1969 through December 3, 1979. Nearly 10 full years! 166 consecutive polls! Al McGuire was good at his job.
Marquette picked up 309 points worth of votes this week. That puts them in between #20 Purdue with 328 points and #22 Arizona with 289 points. Bit of a close vote in either direction there, but still a long way off from the 135 points earned by #25 BYU.
Dylan Sinn and Mick Shaffer are Marquette’s top supporters amongst the voters this week, with both ballots showing MU at #12. Shaffer gets the edge as the very best supporter, as he moved Marquette up from #14 last week. For some reason. MU got one vote from 13 through 15, and then at least three votes at every spots between 16 and 25. Yes, it is confusing to try to figure out the Golden Eagles right now, and it makes sense that there’s 13 people who declined to vote for Marquette at all.
St. John’s has moved up to #7 in the country this week, which is their best ranking since December of 1991. They’re the best ranked team on Marquette’s schedule right now, although #9 Iowa State isn’t that far behind them after falling one spot. #11 Wisconsin is holding steady this week even after flubbing a lead at home against Oregon on Saturday. Maryland has moved up four spots to #16, and we already mentioned Purdue at #20, but we didn’t say that they’re down seven spots from last week.
Creighton is the unofficial #26 team in the country, but at 53 points, they’re a pretty decent chunk of space off from BYU. They’re the only team on MU’s schedule in the Receiving Votes department this week.
Marquette will return to action on Tuesday evening when they host Providence at Fiserv Forum. Tipoff is set for 6pm Central and FS1 will have the broadcast.
