The loss to St. John’s in the Big East semifinals dropped the Golden Eagles out of the top 25 after 50 straight appearances in the poll.
Well, it’s over now.
Marquette men’s basketball had appeared in every Associated Press top 25 poll dating back to January 2023. It was a run of 50 straight poll appearances.
I am using the past tense, because the new poll is out on Monday afternoon, and yep: Marquette’s not ranked any more after losing to St. John’s in the Big East tournament semifinals. They’re still earning votes, mind you. They picked up 69 points this week, which is good enough to be the unofficial #27 team in the country, but it’s also a long way behind Drake at #26 with 107 points. #25 Oregon aren’t that much further at 115 points, but that’s pretty far off from where MU is right now.
Marquette’s top supporter right now is Dylan Sinn, who has the Golden Eagles at #19 in the country. They have three votes each at #20, #21, and #22, one at #23, and then four votes each at #24 and #25. Obviously, a majority of voters have the Golden Eagles outside the top 25 heading into the NCAA tournament…. which makes sense, as even the selection committee for the field of 68 put MU at #26.
St. John’s moves up one spot in the rankings to #5 in the country after cutting down the nets at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. That makes them the top ranked team on Marquette’s schedule by a pretty healthy margin in front of Maryland, who stayed steady at #11. Wisconsin jumped up five spots after reaching the Big Ten title game, while Iowa State dipped three spots to #15. Purdue rounds out the list of ranked Marquette foes this week after falling two spots to #22.
Marquette has some friendly faces in the Receiving Votes department. Creighton picked up 28 points worth of votes while appearing on six ballots this week, while UConn picked up two 24th place votes for a total of four points.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Friday evening when they face New Mexico in the 7/10 game of the South Region of the 2025 NCAA men’s basketball tournament. TBS will carry the broadcast.
