Throwing it way back to either 2007 or 2016, depending on your point of view.
I’ve got real bad news for you if you remember sitting in the Marquette student section at the Bradley Center watching Jae Crowder win a Big East Player of the Year trophy.
The bad news is thus: Your college years are now far enough behind you that they can be considered retro.
On Tuesday, Marquette men’s basketball announced that starting on Wednesday night against Stonehill, the gold uniform style worn by Crowder in that POY season is returning.
What does “starting” mean in this case? Not 100% sure yet, but it certainly implies that we’ll see this set at least one more time during the 2024-25 season.
I used Jae Crowder as the hook at the top, but Crowder’s Marquette teams weren’t the first to wear this style. They debuted in the 2007-08 season, which was the junior year for Dominic James, Jerel McNeal, and Wesley Matthews. Here’s James wearing these unis in the NCAA tournament against Kentucky that season.
That was Tom Crean’s last year in charge at Marquette, so the uniforms were still around when Buzz Williams took over the following season. MU wore that style for Williams’ entire tenure with the exception of a slight update between Jae Crowder’s two years in Milwaukee as the giant blue shoulder patches, as seen here:
were removed in favor of an angular side accent, as seen here:
That version of the uniforms held steady to the end of Williams’ tenure as head coach and then through the first two years of Steve Wojciechowski’s time in charge. That means that the only photos of Henry Ellenson playing for Marquette have that same uniform style:
It appears that the throwback design is more of a throwback to the original style of uniform, as Chase Ross has a pretty notable shoulder patch. That’s fine, the fact that Marquette is wearing a throwback at all is still pretty neat.
Thoughts? Questions? That’s what the comments section is for.
