Shaka Smart’s Golden Eagles will play the Catamounts over Thanksgiving weekend, but the region could use our help now.
When the Big East men’s basketball television schedule came out earlier this week, putting together the table for that blog article reminded me that Shaka Smart’s Marquette men’s basketball team is scheduled to play Western Carolina over Thanksgiving weekend when the 2024-25 season gets underway. That made me wonder how WCU is doing after the landfall of Hurricane Helene, as Asheville got hit very hard and that’s on the western end of the state.
As it turns out, WCU and the general Cullowhee area are mostly okay. However, their county is in a state of emergency, prompting their home football game against Wofford this coming weekend to be played without spectators in order to keep roads clear for relief efforts. So, clearly, things could be doing better, and they could use a bit of help.
WCU electing to keep their fans at home reminded me of Spencer Hall and Holly Anderson’s Channel 6 newsletter, specifically Monday’s Top Whatever column that took Clemson to task for running their home game with full capacity this past Saturday. That’s full capacity, with all the law enforcement and tailgating supplies that go into a football game getting spent in that regard instead of, y’know, people who need help.
And so, I’m lifting Channel 6’s list of local charities from the Top Whatever and putting them here. Find one that suits your particular interest, and send the area, including eastern Tennessee as well, a little bit of Marquette love and attention. If you want, tweet a receipt from your donation to @AnonymousEagle (I’ll RT you to spread some attention around) or to @Channel6_feed or send an email to Channel 6 and let them know that AE sent ya with the best of intentions.
