The Golden Eagles went down to Wilmette and came away with a neutral site win over the Falcons to wrap up non-conference action.
I took one look at the weather forecast for Wilmette, Illinois, on Friday evening and said “no, I do not wish to drive an hour to sit in 30 degree weather to watch Marquette men’s lacrosse.” And so, my understanding of what happened in Marquette’s 9-8 win over Air Force is limited to how I experienced it via live stats on my comfy couch in my toasty warm living room.
For starters, I didn’t pay very close attention to the live stats because Marquette women’s lacrosse had started with a video stream from Indianapolis an hour earlier. So, by the time I fired up the live stats about 15 minutes after the scheduled start time, Air Force was up 3-0. Folks, that’s a sign to go back to ignoring the live stats for a very long time to see if something changes.
The women’s game ended — 16-5 Marquette, huzzah, first place Golden Eagles — which is a great time to peek back in at the live stats. 4-4, all tied up at the half, and Nolan Rappis had a hat trick with three goals in just 12 minutes of game time. Okay, they’ve got a stew going. Not bad.
Time to play Assassin’s Creed: Shadows and glance at the live stats every so often.
Things moved VERY quickly in the third quarter once they started moving. I got distracted doing some stuff in 16th century Japan, and when I checked in, Adam Slager had just tied the game at seven goals each. I sez to myself, self, if face off man Adam Slager scored, that means there had just been a goal. Yep, Matt Caputo had scored for MU just two seconds earlier. As it turns out, the two teams combined to score five goals in the final 4:20 of the quarter to make it 8-7 Air Force going to the final frame.
After recruiting a blacksmith to run my forge, I checked in on the live stats. Will Foster had scored to tie the game at eight with 10:22 to go, which is fun. As I was typing that into Ye Olde Bluesky, Jake Bair scored for Marquette to make it 9-8. I like when things happen as I’m posting about other things, it’s exciting.
Anyway, that was it for goals in the game as Lucas Lawas made a save with 20 seconds left and MU got the clearance to hold on for the win.
Could I read the play by play or team stats more closely to tell you things about this game? Probably, but that’s just guessing because there was no live stream of this game.
Marquette has now won three straight games to move to 5-3 on the year. That gives the Golden Eagles one more win than they did a year ago, and Jake Richard’s next victory in his first season as head coach will tie the mark for most wins in a season since the Golden Eagles went 8-8 back in 2017. Seems like a positive trend, buuuuuuut……..
Up Next: Big East play! Marquette opens up league action with a home game against St. John’s. The Red Storm will be in the Valley next Saturday for an 11am Central time start, and FloSports will have the broadcast. St. John’s is 4-6 this season after a 13-11 neutral site win over Hobart on Saturday for their second straight victory.
